Analysis: Narrative and Story Essay
The stylistic analysis of Richard Gordonââ¬â¢s story ââ¬Å"Doctor in the houseâ⬠ by Arailym Zharmukhamed from IN-11-2 ââ¬Å"Doctor in the houseâ⬠ was written by Richard Gordon, a famous English writer. He was born in 1921. He had been a surgeon and anaesthetist, he wrote numerous novels, screenplays for film and television and accounts of popular history, mostly dealing with the practice of medicine. He was most famous for a long series of comic novels on a medical theme starting with ââ¬Å"Doctor in the Houseâ⬠, and the subsequent film, television, radio and stage adaptations. Everything that author described in the story ââ¬Å"Doctor in the houseâ⬠ was true to life, that is why it made this story so popular among people. The subject of the story is sitting for examinations. Well, now Iââ¬â¢m going to analyze the story. The story is short. And narrative mode of the text are both narration and description. The author describes us what examination means for students and narrates about exam itself and his own experience when he was a student. The plot structure of the story is interesting one. The exposition of the text starts with the explanation what examination means for a medical student and what examination means in whole. After the explanation we come to the inciting moment when the narrator takes his exam. I slowly pass to the climax of the story when Richard is waiting for the results. And I come to the resolution when he has learnt that passed the examinations. Having analyzed the plot structure, I would like to give the summary of the extract. The story takes place during the examination for medical students. As the narrator mentions itââ¬â¢s something like a death. The exam is consists of two parts, they are written papers and oral examination. 3 hours are allowed for the paper. Students swott up the spot questions, because there is rarely any frank cheating in medical examinations. When the narrator is finished with the written papers, he meets Grimsdyke who knows that thereââ¬â¢s a special system of marking the tripos and the narrator shouldnââ¬â¢t worry about it. As for the viva, it was a judgement day, because a false answer and the student is finished. There were 5 other students with the narrator who were passing the viva. When it was his turn to pass it he easily copes with the first question, but stumbles through the second, that is why the days after the viva are black ones. At last the day when students could learn their results comes. Itââ¬â¢s the Secretary who simply should say ââ¬Å"passâ⬠ or ââ¬Å"failedâ⬠. The narrator worries so much that even doesnââ¬â¢t hear theà  Secretary who named his number. So it turned out that the narrator passed his exam. His feelings are mixed. Now, Iââ¬â¢m gradually passing to the main characters of the story. Here is only one main character ââ¬â the narrator. The method of character drawing is indirect. He is round, dynamic, protagonist character. The narrator is a medical student. During the whole story we can see him passing through examinations. The day of the examination was the worst thing on the earth, something like death for all students. If you want to pass it you should be ready. So, I think he is well-read in medicine, hard-working person, because there is rarely any frank cheating in medical examinations, so a student should know the material and help himself. He managed with this. I also can say that he is very observant. The narrator notices different kind of emotions on peopleââ¬â¢s faces. For example he talks about porters who look dispassionately down at students, he sees an awkward expression of self-consciousness and superiority in students faces, he notices that the womanââ¬â¢s suit was neat but not smart, that her hair tidy but not striking, that she wore enough make-up to look attractive. The narrator is an interesting character, he likes to compare people with somebody. For examples, he compares porters with policemen, examination is something like death as he mentions, the Old Stager with a photographer at a wedding. He can easily find the right word to describe the person. So, I can say that he is smart. We also know he passed his exam, it means his knowledge of medicine are good enough and maybe one day heââ¬â¢ll become a doctor. On the whole, I can say that he creates an image of an ordinary student. I slowly come to the authorââ¬â¢s style of the text. If to look at the text, we may notice that it is written in the first person narration: ââ¬Å"I walked down the stairs feeling as if I had just finished an eight-round fightâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ,â⬠I was shown to a tiny waiting-roomâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ or ââ¬Å"I stood before table four. I didnââ¬â¢t recognize the examiners.â⬠ And so on. Speaking about vocabulary of the story, it is important to say that the language is expressive, emotional. Richard Gordon uses lots of thematic words such as ââ¬Å"student, cheating, the examiners, to pass, tripos the viva, written papersâ⬠, etc. The author uses stylistic devices and expressive means to achieve desired effect in describing characters and examination itself. Well, on the whole the text is emotionally moving. Now I want to provide some examples of Stylistic devices. Richard Gordon uses simile, metaphor, hyperbole, allusion,à  metonymy. By the simile ââ¬Å"examinations are something like deathâ⬠, the author shows what the students feel before it, their condition; ââ¬Å"like a prize-fighterâ⬠, here Richard Gordon wants to show the atmosphere of contest between the student himself and the examiner; by using metaphor ââ¬Å"well-trodden pathsâ⬠ the author shows the attitude to the medical textbooks; ââ¬Å"frustrated brillianceâ⬠ about a gone hope of a student; by using a hypebole ââ¬Å"an examination is nothing more than an investigation of a manà ¢â¬â¢s knowledgeâ⬠, the author shows what the examination is. Or ââ¬Å"But the viva is judgement day. A false answer, and the godââ¬â¢s brow threatens like imminent thunderstormâ⬠ to show the importance of examination for students; the author excellently uses the allusion referring to the Bibleââ¬â¢s Judgment day. We discover that final exams are death and the Secretary as an archangel corresponds where they would go to the paradise or to hell. So, we can see that the text is rich in stylistic devices, it makes it vivid. Itââ¬â¢s important to mention that the syntax of the story also helps to make the story vivid. Each sentence is complete. The structure of the sentences is characterized by a strict adherence to logic, the author uses parallels constructions which help to reflect the tense during anticipation of the narratorââ¬â¢s result: ââ¬Å"The world stood still. The traffic stopped, the plants ceased growing, men were paralysed, the clouds hung in the air, the winds dropped, the tides disappeared, the sun halted in the s ky.â⬠ Having analyzed stylistic devises we can describe the atmosphere and tone of the story. In the beginning the atmosphere is strained, in the middle of the test when students start examination it becomes nervous, but in the end itââ¬â¢s relaxed because the narrator has known that he passed the exam. The tone is serious because the narrator describes the examination and shows the importance of it for students. Having realized the story we can easily find the theme and the main idea of it. The theme of the story is worries about examination. The main idea is that examination is a real challenge for students and a real testing of being ready for different difficulties. And now, Iââ¬â¢m trying to conclude my thoughts. In our world, there are full of difficulties and various problems. Iââ¬â¢m sure no one can say that he is free from spoiling his nerves and health in order to overcome some important destiny barriers. As a matter of fact, who can agree that life is more interesting, when it flows as a calm river of constantly and monotonously changing events? A personà  becomes experienced and strong only having felt the whole disgrace of the world he has a chance to live in. And what an amazing quality our memory has; it specially chooses the worst recollections and with the sense cruelty reminds us our past mistakes and annoyances, making us feel that awful feelings again and again. The fact that nothing can be as memorable as our misfortunes was remarkably proved by Richard Gordon. Having a great medical practice, the author reveals his own recollections of the old days, when he was just a student, stumbling through the most scaring trial in his life ââ¬â the finals. He colourfully describes all the sides of his extremely important event. Cheating is practically impossible, all the knowledge is an inseparable mass in the heads of young and full of hopes students. Oral and writing examinations become some kind of a ââ¬Å"judgment dayâ⬠. And not everyone becomes that lucky, who will take the diploma from the professorââ¬â¢s hands. With an irony the author gives us the description of studentsââ¬â¢ feelings and behaviour. Some of them have ââ¬Å"superiosity in their facesâ⬠, others were trying to complete the last brilliant sentence, ââ¬Å"dissatisfied with the period allowed for them to express themselvesâ⬠. After years such event seems to be extremely funny. The author showed us the atmosphere people sometimes have to be in. Recollecting my own experience I can say that in many cases my feelings were the same. Everything, which happens to us sooner or later turns into the simple recollection. Of course it puts a trace in our mind, and not always pleasant one. Author gives us a way to understanding of such things. It is humour, the best ââ¬Å"cure of the injuresâ⬠ the life gives us. Remembering this rule a person is able to overcome many life trials, becoming stronger and wiser. In this case even the best professor canââ¬â¢t be compared with the teacher we all have ââ¬â our past. For me, every time the examinations require from me much effort and nerves for preparation and passing them. So, heaving read this story, I found that Richard Gordon is a master of witty descriptions of serious and important events in peopleââ¬â¢s life. Not many authors are able to achieve this effect in his or her works, but Richard Gordon made this perfectly.

Culture Of Madness Midterm Essay
In the course of the week as directed for the midterm assignment, I was able to hear remarks made to imply that something irrational had been said or had occurred. Of all those time there are two that were in my opinion most interesting. They are as follows;- In the first instance the remark that referred to irrationality was made was during a conversation between two girls. One was telling the other of something that a friend of theirs had said the previous day. The two were chatting away excitedly as one described to the other what had transpired. The remark ââ¬Ëshe canââ¬â¢t be seriousââ¬â¢ was made by the listening friend. She remarked this when the other friend told her that their friend (X), a girlfriend not present there, had told her that she wanted to seek the services of a palm reader. The conversation then proceeded by girl H saying that that was her reaction too. Girl B wanted to know why their friend wanted to visit the palm reader. An explanation followed where girl H said that their friend X had read in the internet that palm readers could tell what was going to happen in oneââ¬â¢s future. X wanted to know what was going to happen to her so that she could prepare for it and avoid disappointment. The internet had described numerous instances when people were saved embarrassment and disaster when palm readers warned them about it. To this, both girl H and B laughed and agreed that that idea was crazy enough. They made fun on what their friend X would be told by the palm reader. They went on talking asking each other questions discussing their views on the same matter and whether they believed in such things. In the second scenario there was a couple, probably a married one, where the lady told the man that she had quit her job. To this the husband remarked ââ¬ËYouââ¬â¢ve got to be kiddingââ¬â¢. The tone of the woman was casual at the start. In making the remark the man seemed to be in disbelief as one who wanted the statement by the woman not to be true. The conversation proceeded with the lady reaffirming her statement and adding that she had handed in her resignation letter earlier. When asked why she had done that, the woman without mincing her words replied that she had had a dream severally, around three times in the previous week that the building in which she worked was going to collapse killing people with it. The fact that the dream had come to her three times, she believed, meant that she was being warned of what would happen in future and so she had to take precaution. It would be wrong for her to ignore the signs only to regret later. Life was more precious than money and that is why she had made the decision. The tone of the conversation turned serious when the man again remarked, ââ¬Ëthat is crazyââ¬â¢. He seemed very annoyed and thought the wife had done the wrong thing and proceeded to tell her so. The tempers were flared as the woman was in pains to explain why she had resigned and the man was either too angry or disappointed to hear her out. The man termed her beliefs as outrageous and insensible which made the woman even angrier. She finally walked out saying that it was meaningless to have such a conversation with someone who did not want to understand. In the first case when the remark was made it made girl H who was narrating the incident even more eager to continue with it. It gave her a chance to explain in detail why their friend had made such a statement. The response seemed to make the conversation more interesting and implied that the one listening to the story was interested in more information. A reaction that was foreclosed or resisted was one whereby the friend narrating the story could refuse to part with more information about the incident in discussion. The remark also made sure that the conversation stayed on course as it showed that the listener was quite interested in what went on , or why their friend being discussed had said that she wished her mother were dead. The response confirmed the intention of the narrator. Who also affirmed that she thought that their friend could not have possibly been serious that she was going to visit a palm reader. The remark made the narrator know that her perceiving the story as one worth sharing was right. This reassurance made the girl even more eager to tell what transpired and to even give her views about the whole incident. In the second case the remark ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢ve got to be kiddingââ¬â¢ made the woman seem even more serious in her assertion. It made her reiterate her statement that she had quit her job. It also made her want to give an explanation for her desire before being misunderstood by the man. The remark, also made the situation take an even more serious tone as it actually implied that jokes would be inappropriate at that time or the issue at hand was not a joking matter. The reactions that were resisted were those of turning the matter into a laughing matter when it was serious. Also the chance to dismiss the incident as inconsequential was closed out. The remark showed that the man was very serious about the subject at hand and therefore the woman could not easily divert the conversation or wish it away as trivial. After the remark the conversation seemed to take a very serious tone. First the remark showed that the man was not at all in agreement with what the woman had done and would take a lot to convince him that it was the right thing to do. In fact further along the conversation another remark depicting irrationality was made by the man. This made the woman more agitated as she wanted the man to see things from her point of view and she had not had a chance to make him do this. As the conversation continued it seemed to almost generate into a disagreement with the couple trying to keep their voices low in a public place. In the first scenario if the remark had not been made by girl B, the excitement of the story would have taken a dip. A different statement like ââ¬ËOh yes I have been looking for a palm reader myselfââ¬â¢, would probably have come as a shock to girl H who thought the idea of visiting a palm reader to be awkward as well. The conversation would then have turned to a discussion or even an argument for and against the practice of visiting palm readers. Because girl H thought visiting a palm reader was ridiculous maybe the argument would have turned out to be serious making the two friends part ways or agree to disagree. The other case would have been for girl B to answer in a way to show curiosity. For example ââ¬ËOh really what does she want to find out? ââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëoh yeah! , do those things work, can they really tell the future by looking at oneââ¬â¢s palm? ââ¬â¢ Because girl B would not have shown support or disagree with what X wanted to do the girls would have continued in a discussion to explore different views concerning such practices. They would each give their different views on palm reading. If the concept of visiting a palm reader would not have been ridiculous to both girls, maybe they would have delved into discussions concerning the same with examples of what they had heard about the same. The conversation would have led to the issues about gift in telling the future, the use of magic, sorcery and the like. The girls may have even agreed to join their friend when going to visit the palm reader. In this scenario the two girls were in agreement that seeing a palm reader was crazy. Though I did not have an opportunity to listen to them for long, I think that they would have described the practice as backward and funny. They would have dismissed it as a practice used by the so called ââ¬Ëfuture seersââ¬â¢ to steal money from people who were naive enough to believe that such things were true. They would have termed those people who visit palm readers as superstitious. Some people who because they did not have anything they believed in, were looking for some thing to grasp. They would also have dismissed the practice of palm reading as that for those who were afraid of the future and therefore were looking for ways to manipulate it or even find hope and courage if they found that the future had something good to look out for according to the palm reader. For the case involving the couple if the man had responded in a different way say maybe was more interested in the dreams that made the woman quite her job, the woman would have probably passionately described her convictions for what dreams tell about the future,. The conversation would have gone on and on how other people had dreams that made them avoid disasters. The man would have probably shared some dreams as well and their significance in his life. There would not have been an argument over quitting the job during hard economic times owing to ââ¬Ëirrational beliefsââ¬â¢. The couple would have agreed that the action taken by the woman was the best for that situation and gone on to encourage themselves that they were going to land another better job for the woman. Since they had taken it upon themselves to warn themselves of an impending danger then fate would have directed them to another equally good or even better job. The couple would have gone on to explore the gifting of some people who have the ability to tell what the future hold using dreams or even visions. They would also have discussed whether it was appropriate to tell some of her friends working at the building to follow her steps so as to be saved from injury or even death. They may have even proposed ways of nurturing the gift like reading books or finding other people with the same gift as the woman then forming a support group so to speak. In this case since the man found the idea of quitting a job because of a dream irrational, he may have dismissed it as superstitious when they met later. He would have wished the dream away as a result of what she had been thinking during the day or a movie she had watched. Her mind had just worked on what it had processed during the day and there was real news about the future from the dream. Believing in dream would have been dismissed with the man saying that if everything that people dreamt had been a forecast of the future then no disasters would have ever hurt anyone as they would be averted in time and save people a lot of grief. The woman on the other hand would defend her case by giving examples of instances when something she had dreamt came true in real life. Apart from this she would argue that the fact that the dream was recurrent it was a clear sign that she needed to take action to avoid the impending danger. Yes -not all dreams depict the future, but the one that had made her wake up feeling anxious an indication that there was more to it than she had imagined, she would defend herself: She would dismiss lack of treating the dreams she had as important as a sign that one did not believe in supernatural occurrences yet there were many that had been documented in books even in the present day. Does Marketing create or satisfy needs
Marketing is an ongoing activity that does not stop, continuously obtaining needs that define a state of felt deprivation and wants that defines what Is need. It Involves transaction In terms price, place, product and promotion. At the end of this exchange, the most important result most desired is customer satisfaction. The discovering and satisfying of consumers' needs and wants is the prime marketing activity. Thus, the marketing function is to search needs and then satisfy it.According to Philip Kotler, he mission of marketing is to create products that satisfy the unmet needs of target markets. The marketers do not create needs: Needs preexist marketers. Marketers, along with other societal factors Influence wants. Marketers might promote the Idea that a Mercedes would satisfy a person's need for social status. They do not, however, create the need for social status. We all need to eat, drink and sleep and reproduce, this is all part of who we are as human beings. Therefore at th e basic level ompanies will strive to satisfy these functions and keep doing so by once in a while showing advertisements that tells the public that they are around and can provide the products they need. The other aspect Is that needs vary depending on what country and society you live In. ââ¬Å"For example a consumer In the United States may need food but may want a hamburger, french fries and a soft drink and a person that lives in Mauritius that needs food may want a mango, rice, lentils and beans. Wants are shaped by our society.Marketers must therefore continually be creating and developing attractive products and then in turn devising a brilliant marketing strategy to win the consumer over to buy their product over other competing products. Companies strive to retain their customer base by delivering value and satisfaction from their products and this Is formulated in consumers' minds as a combination of service, quality and price. Some consumers would not mind paying a high er price for an item or service if they received very good service.

Project Management - Essay Example The universal credit has brought together a variety of working-age benefits and put them into a single payment. The Universal credit project was aimed at encouraging the individuals on benefits to initiate paid work or to have overtime hours to work by ensuring that the job is paying. The Universal credit project also helped bring in a smoothened transition when getting into work and at the time of retiring. The Universal Credit system has also brought about a simplification in its operation with respect to the previous system in that it has become easy for people to comprehend its working and it is simpler and less expensive to dispense (Department for Work & Pensions 2013b). The welfare system also aimed to significantly reduce the number of individuals who are under poverty and they are still working. It also aimed to reduce chances of errors and fraud that have been witnessed in the current system. This project had good intentions and it was seen as the best and efficient way at the time to deal with the welfare situation and diminish poverty. This project on being run has come across several setbacks that have seen it receive criticism from various corners. The media especially depicted negative publicity of the Universal Credit project citing poor management and lack of transparency within the system. Management of the Universal Credit project has witnessed various changes within the management running the system severally. This report hopes to review how to effectively manage a project and with the reference of the Universal Credit project I will cite ways in which such a project would effectively have been managed in a bid to eliminate the problems in management that the project faced when it was set to run. Background Many individuals on benefits are of the thought that the financial threats of moving into work are extremely high. Some people have actually viewed the gains from the work they do, especially working during part time, to be very little an d such gains are easily neutralized by other expenses that increase day in day out such as the fee involved in transportation. The government of United Kingdom considered and viewed the current program to be too complicated and it lacks rewards and incentives that will encourage and boost the morale of individuals on benefits to initiate paid work or to have overtime hours to work. The government hence set out to come up with a system that would do this and that was fairer and was cheap to afford in a bid to diminish joblessness, welfare dependency and poverty and to decrease the degree of error and fraud (Department for Work & Pensions 2013b). The United Kingdom government hence came up with a welfare system that would do all this and it was what we now know as the Universal credit. The welfare program was aimed at ensuring that a large number of people get into jobs and those in jobs to successively progress in them. Project initiation This is the most crucial stage of any project . It is the first process in the project development lifecycle. Project initiation is the major determiner of whether the project will turn out to be a success and hence keenness and efficiency should be observed in this process. Most projects that fail during deployment have

The Pathophysiology of Hepatitis B Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Pathophysiology of Hepatitis B - Term Paper Example Infection with HBV may result in acute, fulminant or chronic hepatitis, sometimes even resulting in a chronic asymptomatic carrier state, apart from hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis (Davis 179). The disease is transmitted when an individual comes in contact with infected blood or objects. It may also be transferred from an infected mother to her infant either during or after birth (Harrison, Dusheiko and Zuckerman 211). Transmission may also occur by accidental inoculation from infected needles and hospital equipment, intravenous drug abuse, body piercing, tattooing, and mouth-mouth kissing (Harrison, Dusheiko and Zuckerman 210). The risk of Hepatitis B is particularly high in individuals with multiple sex partners, and in homosexuals. The HBV virus occurs in morphologically different forms in the serum of infected individuals. HBV infection has an incubation period of about 75 days. Systemic symptoms of the disease include fatigue, fever, dyspepsia, arthralgia, malaise, and rash, while local symptoms include hepatomegaly, jaundice, dark urine, and pale stools (Davis 179; Harrison, Dusheiko and Zuckerman 210). Anatomical/physiological/biochemical changes that lead to the disease Hepatitis B results from cellular injury to the liver, subsequently affecting its metabolic functions. However, the HBV is not cytopathic by itself. The pathogenesis of Hepatitis B occurs as a result of the interactions between the hostââ¬â¢s immune system and the virus. The host immune system targets HBV in liver cells (hepatocytes), inadvertently causing damage to the liver. HBV derived proteins (nucleocapsid antigens ââ¬â HBcAg and HBeAg) present on the surface of infected hepatocytes are recognized and targeted by activated CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes, resulting in an immunologic reaction that leads to hepatocellular damage (Pyrsopoulos & Reddy; Harrison, Dusheiko and Zuckerman 221). The immune response against hepatitis B is T-cell mediated. These immune responses against infected hepatocytes result in liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinomas. Damage to hepatocytes also manifests as spotty acidophilic necrosis and lymphohistiocytic lobular inflammation in the liver (UPMC). Anatomical/physiological/biochemical changes the disease causes Hepatitis B disease pathology is mainly a result of impaired liver function due to hepatocellular damage. The anatomical and physiological changes that result from HBV infection are arthralgia, cholecystitis, cholangitis, bradycardia, irritability, lethargy, jaundice, fever, erythema, nausea, spider angiomas, splenomegaly and bile duct obstruction in some cases (Turkington and Ashby, 148; Davis 181). Patients experience extreme fatigue and malaise, and discharge dark urine and pale stools. In addition, there is significant weight loss. Chronic hepatitis may result in liver cancers (hepatocellular carcinomas). The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma is highest in individuals with HBV infected cirrhotic liv er (Harrison, Dusheiko and Zuckerman 234). These cancers develop due to integration of viral DNA in host genome, apart from a variety of other factors. Biochemical changes as a result of HBV infection include elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels due to liver damage. Jaundice, a common symptom in HBV infections, results from impaired bilirubin metabolism in the liver. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that results from the breakdown of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin breakdown mainly occurs in the hepatocytes, where the resulting bilirubin is converted into a water-soluble compound and excreted through bile into the gut. Impairment of the hepatocytes due to HBV infection prevents the liver from carrying out this function effectively. Inability to excrete bilirubin results in its redistribution

In second phase there is future educational opportunities for professional growth. The subject of professional Resource portfolio for students, the proper planning is requires continuing their managerial role in future. There is a need of some proper strategies objectives, where all are considered equal, critics are reluctant to support special programming for students because of the fear and suspicion that intellectualism may lead to elitism (Dieker, L. A.2001, 22-36). On the other hand, there is the American ideal, most notably reflected in Brown, and the IDEA, of helping all to succeed and reach their full potential. As noted in this Article, this ambivalence is far from resolved. But there are some vital aspects have been highlighted for their professional growth (Dietz, M. E.2004). The coaching profession has g... For professional portfolio development and growth, students need to be trained in the following grounds: There may be as many as maximum professional coaches worldwide (Dollase, R. H.2003, 85-98). One consulting firm estimated that 59% of organizations now offer coaching or developmental counseling to their managers and executives. Equal Educational Opportunities: A Brief, But Necessary, Excursus Equal opportunities can build strong features of students for their future management roles. Board of Education and its progeny should emphasis on the quality education of students for making their strong portfolio. Indeed, there is the cornerstone of all subsequent legal developments ensuring the rights of disenfranchised groups (Giuliano, F. J. (2005, 42-45). Consequently, reviewing the development of special education is relevant because, like students with disabilities, students have individualized needs and should be entitled to some protection. This section of the article reviews the case law involving all students. This section discusses cases focused on admissions and placement, transportation, federal claims, and race. Admissions and Placement Absent an express statutory or regulatory mandate, when a school board employs a rational method of selection, such as a lottery, that gives all qualified children an equal opportunity to enter a program with a limited number of openings or a program restricted to students of a certain age, courts have generally adopted an all or nothing approach to the extent that a student is either admitted or excluded from gifted education. Leadership Roles New work structures impose new directions for leadership in professional candidates. Leaders must know how to create new organizational designs to match their goals. Japanese manga censorship Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Japanese manga censorship - Research Paper Example Sometimes the word ââ¬Å"airâ⬠ is used to describe manga in Japanese which implies its possibility to penetrate everywhere: people buy manga on trains, in local supermarkets and small shops, in cinemas and read it in parks, luxurious apartments and shopping malls (Kinsella 4). Why has manga become so widespread and demanded in Japan? In post-war period it became linked to political events of the country and was perceived as counter-cultural experimentation. Most manga nevertheless concentrated on depiction of daily life events. Beginning from the 1970s manga adapted to the tastes of the population and concentrated on the topics popular among men: science fiction, robots, heroic events, however he group of women who appeared in the end of the 1970s adapted manga to female auditory making manga about love and romantic relationships (Gravet 24) The beginning of the 1980s coincided with the growth of the initial manga auditory and the economic rise of the country that is why publishers decided to widen the scope of genres and started looking for explicitly sexual and violent images in manga that were supposed to provide popularity. But the success on the territory of Japan was only a first step because manga has even won its special place in hearts of American readers with the help of exotic heroes, unique style of depiction, and unpredictable plot twists. Manga offered a fresh look on heroic epos: wide-eyed superheroes, latex-booted heroines and wild-haired supervillains have become extremely popular in a faraway America (Wood 14). For a long time manga and anime managed to avoid the attention of censors until an unfortunate case in 1989 when in a house of a serial killer a number of explicitly sexual content was found and he himself turned out to be a member in Comiket, the biggest convention for manga fans in the country. Since then the debates regarding the necessity of censorship for manga do not cease. Though some

Digital Evidence ethics and computer forensics - Essay Example The perpetrators can be the staff in the companies or even the student. When it comes to ethical issues, somebody or the culprit may want to run away from the issue saying that he or she has not committed any offence since no child has gotten access to the material. As per the joint act, a child in this case is somebody who is blow the age of 18 years while child pornography is any form of material that shows or that depict a child doing something that is related to sex. It includes exposure of a childââ¬â¢s private parts such as the genitals or the pubic areas. In addition, an adult disguised to be a child involving himself or she in a sexual conduct is also considered a crime. Digital images of a real child or a fictitious child engaging the same conduct is also considered a crime Case study In 2007, there was a case in high court in United States concerning a university student who was distributing phonographic material within and outside the campus. In the case the student was charged with possessing materials that can be harmful to the children or even an adult who is not pleased with the content of the material. Underlying this belief is the perception that virtual crimes are actions in cyberspace, with its shared virtual community and virtual citizens, and consisting of a mixtur e of real identities, alter egos, clones and even virtual beings. Hence, it is fundamentally different from crimes committed in the physical world. As such, the application and standards of criminal laws for the virtual community should be markedly different from those commonly applied in the courts of the physical world. Though their views appear futuristic and far-fetched at this point in time, the potential for its full or partial adoption may be foreseeable. Already, there are serious talks of the creation of cyber-courts to administer and dispense cyber-justice, which may entail punishments that are unique to the medium and that may not have a real world equivalent (Rittinghouse 2009) Investigation technique Finding substantial evidence was quite cumbersome because the internet use provides to the person who has the intention to stalk. The agencies that enforce laws need to review the law in order for them to come up with new tools and mechanism to combat this crime. The more p ressing and disturbing idea is that the person committing these crimes has the resource for example the skills and expertise on the internet use and he or she is determinant to frustrate or rather humiliate the victims. Research has shown that such perpetrators can decide to do so because of vengeance. Research has shown that stalkers are more experience in terms of age education and professional background. Life Stage Interviews and Reports Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Life Stage Interviews and Reports Paper - Essay Example If a person develops good eating habits, exercises daily, and possesses a positive attitude with regard to the everyday activities since early childhood. He/she will have higher probability to live longer as compared to a person who uses drugs, drinks alcoholic beverage excessively or lives a sedentary life. Many of the late adulthood in the developed countries live longer due to more medical assistance and educational resources available. However, living longer truly depends on the personââ¬â¢s mindset. The development and resulting lifespan of people may be dependent on such factors as their perception of death or afterlife, resiliency in confronting changes in adulthood and attributed value to life. This paper discusses how factors such as their perception of death or afterlife, resiliency in confronting changes in adulthood and attributed value to life have affected the development and quality of the lives of the interviewees who are in their late stages of adulthood. As their views are compared and further information gathered, the apparent role of adult development factors are exhibited. Fear of death or dying is natural and sometimes may cause individuals to become preoccupied and obsessive with the thoughts of death. At times, just the mere mention of death may even cause substantial anxiety for some people. To further illustrate how the fear of death is actually universal, the presence of death is often frightening and unwelcome or even taboo to discuss in some cultures. In more modern cultures, death has been accepted as eminent, thus, embraced. However, the restrictions to certain foods that can be eaten or clothing that can be worn to avoid death or prolong life still prevail. Based on recent psychological studies, there are five primal fears, i.e. fear of dying, the unknown, abandonment, loss of control, pain, and bodily deterioration (Garfield, 2001). All these

How accounting affect stock price Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
How accounting affect stock price - Essay Example Unexpected good accounting performance has a significant effect on CEOââ¬â¢s pay for a short time. However, on long-term basis, the trend reverses, and the pay starts decreasing and thus the benefits accrued evens out. However, in the compensation using the stock price performance, a good stock price translates into increased CEO salary, which on the long-run maintains the rise. Accounting performance is arrived at by an aggregate evaluation of all the subunits of the firm. Acquiring all the required information in computing the aggregate departmental performance is a tedious exercise that takes quite a considerable amount of time. A poor performance in one department is likely to negatively affect the other entire firm. Thus, to ensure a high performance level, the CEO must focus on an increasing performance of all the departments of the firm. Accounting performance is very useful when issuing promotions to various departmental managers and supervisors. The best performing managers and supervisors, and the ones who have maintained an upward trend are awarded with promotions, but not the best method to use in determining a CEOââ¬â¢s compensation. A firm could register an upward growth for a number of years, but assume an upward diminishing growth. This phenomenon occurs when the firm achieves its maximum growth, where all resources are utilized to the optimum. At this point, the firm cannot grow anymore since all its resources are fully utilized. The growth thus becomes stagnant. A CEO who is compensated using this method will start receiving decreasing remuneration as the firmââ¬â¢s performance starts decreasing. In contrary to the accounting performance, the stock prices method does not reach a maximum growth level. A CEO who works hard to achieve growth of the firmsââ¬â¢ stock prices has no limit to the level at which they can
Piaget and the Concrete-Operational Period Assignment
Piaget and the Concrete-Operational Period - Assignment Example The concrete operational stage, which is the element of focus, begins from seven and ends at around eleven years. It involves integration from preoperational stage and children in this stage are able to apply logical reasoning based on principles of conservation (Flavell, 1994). Beyond the concrete operational stage, a child is able o apply deductive techniques in reasoning and solving seemingly complex problems (Garcia & Nanez, 2011). The following is a play to elaborate the concept of a concrete operational period and involves four children (Adam, Isaac, Norah and Cynthia). Adam is six years eight months, Norah is seven years, Isaac is ten and Cynthia are 11 years. The mission of the play to investigate how the children were at different ages will determine or explain changes in the quantity of sugar poured in three different containers using one standard measuring container. An adult named James is going to guide the children through the play and ask questions as well as record observations. (James uses a cylindrical container of one kilogram, 10-centimetre diameter and 30 centimetres height to scoops a kilogram of sugar and pour into the three containers. The first container is cylindrical, 30 centimetres high and 40 centimetres diameter. The second container is cube and measures 20 centimetres length, 20 centimetres wide and 20 centimetres height. The container is also cylindrical in shape and measures 60 centimetres height and 5 centimetres diameter. Transfer of the sugar is such that all the contents of the scooping container fit into each of the three containers. James ensures that each child is attentive and observes the distribution process. James then asks each child to comment by showing container with most and least quantities, and explain their observations). Adam: The third container is taller than the rest and capable of holding more sugar.Ã  In addition, the sugar has filled it near to the brim.Ã   Ã

Skungpoomery - Textual analysis Essay Example for Free
Skungpoomery Textual analysis Essay Skungpoomery features two characters, a mother and her son. The mother is very much a dominant woman who still enjoys fussing over and bossing about her rather useless, weak son. We did an exercise where we visualised what the characters would look like in our heads. Both the mother and the son reminded me of a famous duo, Laurel and Hardy. Mrs Wibble being Oliver Hardy, the domineering one and PC Nicholas Wibble being Stan Laurel, the simple one. Like Hardy treats Laurel, Mrs Wibble treats her son in a condescending way, much to the chagrin of PC Nicholas who would much rather be treated like an adult, and not have his mother still nagging at him. I can picture Mrs Wibble being quite a large character who would be wearing some sort of floral dress with bright red lipstick. I can imagine her voice being loud and perhaps quite high pitched and can see her walking around the stage with a good posture and large strides. PC Nicholas Wibble, I can picture being tall and lanky with a short bowl haircut, which of course his mother would have made him get, and can see him slouching across the stage, with a decidedly nervous disposition. I would imagine his voice would be rather quiet and perhaps slightly squeaky, as if it had not quite broken yet. I found that doing this exercise, helped improve my performance on stage as it meant I was able to act out the characters easier now that I had a clear image of what they looked like and how they acted in my head. PC Nicholas Wibble is still very child like, probably because he still lives at home and Mrs Wibble still treats him like a child rather than the adult that he is. Although PC Wibble may try to stand up to his mother, she will tell him otherwise and he backs down easily, here is an example of this: MRS WIBBLE- Take them off and let me give them a quick press. WIBBLE- O no, Mum-look Im going to be ever so late now. MRS WIBBLE-Take them off, Nicholas, it wont take a moment. WIBBLE- No. MRS WIBBLE- Nicholas!!! WIBBLE- Ooooooooooooh! Doing this exercise made it easier for me to do the butter and trouser scene in the play. This is where the phone is ringing and Mrs Wibble accidentally picks up the iron and puts it to her ear, rather than the phone, and then gets Nicholas to get her some butter to soothe it, and burns his trousers. To make this part of the performance more comical, we had to look at how the characters would move in a panicked way. For example, we thought that we could have Nicholas running about the stage in circles in a confused way, hands on his head, looking about, and thinking what to do while mumbling to himself. We could then have Mrs Wibble shouting at him to get the butter, while sobbing and moaning about her ear loudly, as it would make it more comical for the audience. To make sure that we had enough space on stage for all that was going on, we had to plan out the set and make sure we knew where everything was going to be so that we could determine exactly what the characters had to do and where. Learning and using all of these different techniques was useful when developing our final piece as it meant that we could piece together things that wed used from this practice piece, as well as our own new ideas, to get a good performance. We were now able to visualise exactly what our character would look and act like as well as the way they would move on stage, so that we could get a better understanding of our character and act them out in a suitable way.

Feminism: A Constant Stride Towards Equality Essay -- Gender Studies
ââ¬Å"Women are the only oppressed group in our society that lives in intimate association with their oppressors.â⬠ -Evelyn Cunningham Feminism is an idea based on the assumption that women have the same human, political and social rights as men, furthermore, that women should have the same opportunities as men in their personal choices regarding careers, politics and expression (Reference.com). A feminist text states the authorââ¬â¢s agenda for women in society as they relate to oppression by a patriarchal power structure and the subsequent formation of social ââ¬Ëstandardsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëprotocolsââ¬â¢. It points out deficiencies in society regarding equal opportunity, and the author will make certain the reader will be aware of this motive (Bahar). In a work of fiction, the main character, or heroine, personifies the social struggle against male domination. Unfortunately, feminism is said to have too many negative connotations and thus it seems the term, and therefore the movement, is restricted by the glass ceiling, of which it aims to fight (Ferguson). Numerous works which we explored throughout t he semester possess characteristics of feminist works, in particular, the short story ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and ââ¬Å"A Good Man is Hard to Findâ⬠, written by Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor. These are both considered feminist texts because they aim to portray women as stronger, more independent subjects, and to defy the norms that have been created by men in the past. The feministic ideas that are touched upon help to strengthen the works as well as critique modern society. ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠ tells a story about a womanââ¬â¢s struggles against male-centric thinking and societal ââ¬Ënormsââ¬â¢. Sahara Desert Essay -- essays research papers fc
Sahara Desert The Sahara Desert is the worldââ¬â¢s largest desert area. The word Sahara comes from the Arabic word sahraââ¬â¢, meaning desert. It extends from the Africaââ¬â¢s Atlantic Ocean side to the Red Sea and consists of the countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Sudan. It is about 5,200 miles long. Overall, the Sahara Desert covers 3,500,000 square miles. The geography of the desert is varied. In the west, the Sahara is rocky with varied elevation. It does contain underground rivers, which sometime penetrate the surface, resulting in oases. The central region of the Sahara has more elevation than the other areas, with peaks such as Emi Koussi and Tahat. Even though the area lacks rainfall, these peaks are snowcapped during the winter. The Eastern part of the Sahara, the Libyan Desert, is dry with very few oases. The Sahara's landscape features include shallow basins, large oasis depressions, gravel-covered plains, plateaus, and mountains, sand sheets, dunes and sand seas. Sand sheets and dunes cover over 25 percent of the Saharaââ¬â¢s surface. The most common types of dunes include tied dunes, blowout dunes, and transverse dunes. Within the Sahara are several pyramidal dunes that reach over 500 feet in height while others reach over 1,000 feet. Researchers have for many years tried to figure out how these dunes were formed, but the case remains unsolved. The boundaries, however, are not clearly defined and have been shifting for millennia. The Sahara was once a fertile area; millet was cultivated there over 8000 years ago. About 10,000 years ago, the Sahara was used as land for grazing in which elephants, giraffes and other animals thrived. It is estimated that in 4,000 B.C., the climate began to get drier. The fertile landscape dried up and the desert widened, creating the form that appears today. As conditions gradually became drier, however, and desertification set in, farmers abandoned their land and the animals migrated to other areas. The Saharaââ¬â¢s climate is very hot and dry. Although it is very hot during the day, it does become cold at night. On average, it only has 8 inches of rainfall per year. The Sahara's climate consists of b... ... whole, the Sahara is one of the harshest environments known to man. The majority of the people living in the Sahara Desert are nomads, which means that these people continuously move from region to region in search of better living conditions. It is believed that the first nomadic peoples came to this region after domestic animals were introduced to the Sahara 7,000 years ago. Evidence suggests that the Sahara accumulated diverse groups that quickly formed dense populations throughout the region. The majority of the groups lived separately, but depended on each other for trade. One of the main problems that are happening to the Sahara desert is the continuing development of the boundaries of the desert. This is known as desertification. As global warming continues to increase, the probability of more desert regions becoming bigger is more likely. CUBA: The Great Journey in Economic Development on the United Stateââ¬â¢s
CUBA: The Great Journey in Economic Development on the United Stateââ¬â¢s Doorstep Introduction A discussion of Cuba and the occurrences within the country over the last century is often surrounded by probing analysis as to the extent to which the Revolution of 1959 actually served as a change from past regimes. It is ignorant to evaluate the revolution in a vacuum, because past events that created the climate where such a change could take place. Yet it is also immature to state that 1959 was purely a product of history and previous revolutions. The story of the Cuban revolution and events since does not begin with the revolution itself. Rather, it starts from the political, economic, and social situations which evolved over centuries. The revolution of 1959 was not the first revolution to take place in Cuba. Political struggles within the state had been occurring for years trying to create a stable system that would provide the stage for Cuba to assume its possible level of economic development and growth. Additionally, there was a desire to release the pop ulation from dictator control. The rise of the leader Fidel Castro continues to mark a drastic divergence from previous leadership and policy. For this reason the political changes of 1959 and afterwards must be viewed as a revolution, a complete change of the political system and policy of Cuba. Moreover, after seizing control of Cuba, Fidel Castro implemented a very unique form of Communism often referred to as ââ¬Å"Castroism.â⬠ Under Castroââ¬â¢s control ââ¬â and with substantial help from the Soviet Union ââ¬â Cuba flourished in a number of areas including health care and equality. This Communism and relationship with the U.S.S.R., however, led... ...kin, p. 53 [7] Rabkin, p. 50 [8] Rabkin, p. 54 [9] Rabkin, p. 54 [10] Peter Taaffe, Mai Cuba: Socialism and Democracy. 2000. http://www.slp.at/theorie/cuba_2.html [11] Peter Taaffe, Mai Cuba: Socialism and Democracy. 2000. http://www.slp.at/theorie/cuba_2.html. It’s the Economy, Student! (Reaction Paper)
Itââ¬â¢s the Economy, Student! As the saying goes, ââ¬Å"No one touches a dirty pot without getting his/her hand dirty. â⬠ This reminds me of this topic. Based on my own view about the article written by the former president and now the representative of Pampanga, Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, she had done many good things in our country such as: Our climate changes each decade because everyday people neglected to do their duties in order to save our dying environment. We, as perfect creation of our God Almighty, promised to take care of His creatures but we fail doing it.We must do everything that we can to protect, flourished our nature or environment and its creation, but because of our personal interest and greediness, we explore in several ways on how to make money without thinking the damage that it would do to our world. Moreover, even if we knew that the damage has been done, thus affecting the balance of nature, still we continue doing ways that would destr oy our environment just to amaze more power and wealth. Congresswoman Gloria M.Arroyo, in her given information, said that she was too concerned during her time in promoting how to save our dying environment and she even mentioned this in her talked to Asia Pacific Economic Council (APEC) convention. It is very ironic, while sheââ¬â¢s demonstrating her concern to our environment, several mining businesses were allowed to operate during her time such as the ones being mentioned in the news that there was this kind of mining, such as selling the entire mountain in Surigao Del Norte and shipping it to other countries such as China and other neighboring countries.I am just astonished on how perfect she played her game, playing around the circle. Now tell me whoââ¬â¢s talking? The mountain that cannot be replaced anymore. And who will be to blame? The calamities, one after another, that we are experiencing this days, are the products of the great master plan of the once greedy pers on. Yes she signed a large laws to codify the environment such as clean water, bio fuelâ⬠¦etc. nd yet what was the result of our natural gas, ââ¬Å"THE MALAPAYA DEEP WATER GAS PROJECT IN PALAWANâ⬠ still we are spending dollars importing gases â⬠¦tell me whoââ¬â¢s talkingâ⬠¦ She said that she created a program that could fight for the continuously increasing unemployed citizens in the country, jobless citizens, so we can over calm poverty, she managed to compare her program to the program of former president Estrada, whoââ¬â¢s presidency lasted only for 2 yrsâ⬠¦definitely her program runs through many years, but does it give credit?Tell me whoââ¬â¢s talkingâ⬠¦. Talking about the education â⬠¦ let me say, as I recall it right, she managed to get mad at Department of Education Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali, when the latter said to her on national television that the schools in our country need classrooms, teachers, etc. because they can no lo nger accommodate 70 to 100 students per class. Even Amorsolo canââ¬â¢t paint her aura, the news anchor that time fed in the advertisement at once so the viewer will not notice that scene. The report stated that, ââ¬Å"For Filipinos, family is everything and the future of our children is sacred. That is why I invested so much time and effort in rejuvenating our education system. I met with teachers and other educators to get a first-hand look at the improvements that we need to make. I listened to what these fine public servants had to say, and in response to their advice, I increased the countryââ¬â¢s total budget for education by nearly four times: from Ps 6. 6 Billion in 2000 to Ps 24. 3 Billion in 2010 when I stepped down. Those funds went into the following critical areas of educational spending: Now thinking how she foreseen those problems ,and eventually the solution to those problems, if she manage to done it right definitely our present president will able to continue h er act for the betterment of our country, that is if only she done it right.. â⬠ ââ¬Å"As my father, the late President Diosdado Macapagal, used to say that the Presidency of the Philippines is a tough and killing job that demands a sense of sacrifice. At the end of the day, it comes down to plain hard work. A president must work harder than everyone else. And no matter what he thinks he was elected to do ââ¬â even if that includes running after alleged offenders in the past ââ¬â he must not neglect the bread and butter issues that preoccupy most of our people most of the time: keeping prices down, creating more jobs, providing basic services, securing the peace, pursuing the high economic growth that is the only way to vault our country into the ranks of developed economies. I must say that if you were given a chance to serve your people, be sure to do your best even if your best is not enough to the people, but in the eyes of God you are serving Him your very best. No turning back, no one will be blamed. -Rosebelle Harlan

Racism in America Essay
ReconstructionBy9/9/20131. Columbian historian Eric F iodinr (1983) quotes W. E. B. Dubois in calling reconstruction a splendid nonstarter (p.16). After studying the events of late 19th century, throw whether or non you agree with his position. What are the semipermanent implications? In my persuasion the one of the largest mis practise ups that was made was the step of racism that appease continued in America. calm to this day in that respect is a large meter of racism in America, the only difference is it is non just between white and minaciouss. When it comes to racism for well-nigh reason it seems all break pasts and all passel posteriort just issue forth along. Growing up in the south I select seen this outset hand. The problem is now if there is any kinds of dissonance between plys it is blown way out of proportion. A small example would be the Travon Martin case. This case should of not had half of the publicity it did, but because it was a criminal offen se that was white on black people took it as a hate crime. The problem in my persuasion is it was not even white on black and half of America still seems to telephone it was. When people get something in there heads they are overtaking to put their own twist on what they think happened and it will cause things to get out of hand.I believe the Emancipation Proclamation was intended to be the right step in fixing a problem. The problem still existed because even when it comes to law officials there is racism to this day. I have seen police officers that trade people that are not the same race as them differently because that is the way they were raised. That to me is something that is unacceptable, if you are a police officer or a individual in a similar position and they still are using race to make decisions it creates more than problems in the first gear place. On the other cheek some people attempt to use their race to benefit themselves because they are a minority. I went to educate with a young African American that was dissolveed on because of the color of his skin, he was new to our school and was travel into our school because his school was fill when a hurricane came and flooded his school. Some scholars saw a bump to pick on someone because they were different, they talk, look, and act different than others. I saw this happening and became friends with him because I do not believe in this at all. Another studentthat came in wanted to play sports and thought he was the best player on the field. He did not make the team and he filed a disorder with the state of North Carolina saying the reason he did not make the team was because of his race. He was indeed transferred from our school to be take containn a chance to play somewhere else. To me this was someone trying to take advantage of their race in a prejudicious way simply because the student did not get his way to beget with. 4. Identify one hearty leader in the Populist movement an d give a brief synopsis of this persons contributions, failures, and successes in bringing about the ideas of populismIn 1890 Populists won control of the Kansas state legislature, and Kansan William Peffer became the societys first U.S. Senator. Peffer, with his long white beard, was a humorous frame of reference to many Eastern journalists and politicians, who saw little license of Populism in their states and often treated the company as a joke (1890, 2000). Western and Southern Populists gained a large amount of support even though the other parties felt this way. Populists presidential candidate, James B. weaver actually was able to win over one million votes. Because of fraud, intimidation, and violence by the Southern Democrats the fellowship still failed to make any further gains. one(a) of the largest pieces of success was the party being officially founded because of the merger of the Farmers Alliance and the Knights of Labor. Because of all the negative things goin g on because of the Democrat and Republicans all going against the Populist party it made it very hard to continue this party and keep it functioning. Two main juntos had appeared. One, the fusion Populists, desire to merge with the Democrats, using the threat of independent face to force changes in the major partys platform. The Populist organization in Kansas had already fusedover the bitter protest of those who considered this a sell-out. Fusionists argued that the regionally based third party could never taste guinea pig power the best strategy was to work a major party that could (1890, 2000). The Second faction was called mid-roaders and suspected that Democratic leaders wanted to bring down the third-party threat. The Populists party also wanted to schedule the national convention before the Republican and Democrats were able to hold theirs. This would be a fight that was lost and they would have to hold their meeting after themajor-party meetings. In my opinion the la rger parties where using their size and power to make it very difficult for the Populists party to stay in tact and eventually got what they wanted when it was done away with. The Populists began serving more as a token for the Republicans and their nomination that the Populists put through would even begin to ignore the party even though they were the ones who propose him.Reference1890.
